Donor commits $60,000 to Chapleau General Hospital Foundation

The Chapleau General Hospital Foundation is pleased to announce a $60,000 donation from an anonymous donor through the Sybil Anne Brake Fund of the Ottawa Community Foundation.

The donor was inspired to contribute to health care in the Chapleau area after watching the TVO documentary The Doctor Can See You Now, featuring Dr. Doris Mitchell.

The documentary explores Dr. Mitchell's journey to becoming a doctor through her studies at the Northern Ontario School of Medicine, what it was like coming back to her home community to work, and the challenges faced by rural, northern health care providers.

Our plan is to use the donation to establish a Grow Your Own fund. Our main focus will be on staff recruitment and retention, particularly assisting local people who are currently pursuing, entering, or considering a career in a health care field. The goal will be to support them so they can care for those in rural and isolated communities in the North, and ideally right here in Chapleau.

"One of our top priorities is to work on staff recruitment and retention. We can't think of a better way to invest the $60,000," said Chapleau Health Services CEO Jérémy Stevenson.

Chapleau General Hospital Foundation Chair John Branchaud agrees.

"We cannot thank this anonymous donor enough for their generosity. With this money we will be able to work towards our goal of attracting and keeping quality health care professionals in Chapleau."
