Employee Spotlight

Employee Krista Hunter doing physiotherapy with a patient

Q. How long have you been working for SSCHS?

A. It's going on five years.

Q. Can you describe what a typical work day is like for you?

A. I do paperwork in the morning. Then I see long-term care and acute patients, and I do homecare visits in the afternoon. I see outpatients in between that too. I work with people of all different ages.

I spend time chatting and catching up with my patients. In homecare we talk about their personal life and how it affects them, and then we do exercise. Some people live alone and don't have family to help them with their exercise. Sometimes I book appointments for them for foot care or to see the doctor, I'll even take them to their appointments too.

Q. Who do you interact with the most at work?

A. I work closely with Allison, our Occupational Therapist, the Physiotherapist, Nursing and Activation.

Q. How would your co-workers describe you?

A. *Krista laughs, co-worker Allison jumps in.

Allison: Krista makes things fun for patients, they always ask for her. They like to see her, she makes people feel at ease, and they open up to her. She also tells patients how it is, and she tells me how it is! But in a good way, of course!

Q. What's the best part about your job and working for SSCHS?

A. I like how I do a bunch of different things every day. It keeps it interesting. I like the connection I develop with my patients too.

I feel like everyone working here is really close. I like all the special activities and events we have, that the Wellness Committee does. I also love the Christmas party. It's my favourite party of the year.

Q. What is one part of your job that might surprise people?

A. The planning and scheduling part, statistics, coming up with different exercises and activities for the patients.

Q. What made you decide to get into this field of work?

A. I love healthcare and I like helping people so this was a good choice. I also like that there are so many areas of work. You can work in hospitals, mental health, long-term care. You can choose an area that you like. When you're in school, you get a variety of placements so you can decide which is the best fit.

Q. What are some of your interests outside of work?

A. I like the outdoors, I like fishing, I drag race in the summer. I'm from Elliot Lake, I've been in Chapleau for going on 11 years, and I really like this area.
