Tracy Martel working in the diagnostic imaging room

Q. How long have you been working for SSCHS?

A. I've been here for 20 years.

Q. Can you describe what a typical work day is like for you?

A. A typical day is performing X-ray and Ultrasound procedures on outpatients, emergency patients, and inpatients. There is a lot of variety because I do the two modalities. That's actually less common in larger hospitals.

Q. Who do you interact with the most at work?

A. Definitely my patients because I work alone in the department.

Q. How would your co-workers describe you?

A. I think they'd say I'm friendly, that I have a positive outlook, and that I'm pretty calm.

Q. What's the best part about your job and working for SSCHS?

A. The best part about my job is being able to help patients come to a diagnosis. The best part about working at SSCHS is that it allows me to have a well-rounded interaction with my patients. I see patients right after they register, right through to their results. At a larger hospital, you'd just be doing X-ray or just Ultrasound and none of the clerical work. It allows you spend more time with your patients and get closer to them.

Q. What is one part of your job that might surprise people?

A. We're kind of our own little entity. I feel that because I work alone, I don't interact with other staff very much.

Q. What made you decide to get into this field of work?

A. I did my high school co-op placement here in this department. I just thought it was a really unique role and very important in providing diagnosis for patients.

Q. What are some of your interests outside of work?

A. I enjoy outdoor activities like hiking and skiing, and also spending time with my family. In my downtime I like to read.
