Technician Diana McCarthy standing by a door

Q. How long have you been working for SSCHS?

A. It's been about six years.

Q. What made you decide to get into this field of work?

A. It was actually my foot care business. I found it was taking a little too long to get tools back when I took them to get reprocessed so I took the time to do the MDR (Medical Device Reprocessing) course. I actually got into nursing, foot care and MDR all at the same time.

Q. Can you describe what a typical day is like for you?

A. For the MDRD (Medical Device Reprocessing Department) it's standing on your feet for 12 hours and washing dishes, more or less, with a little more technical washing. Basically, I go around and collect all the medical equipment, wash it by hand, load it into the washer disinfector, then into the autoclave for sterilization if needed. I work full time as an RPN as well, both in the hospital and in the community. I also have my foot care business. I'm a Jane of all trades.

Q. Who do you interact with the most at work?

A. In nursing it's with the residents. In the MDRD I'm just stuck by myself in my "dungeon", as I like to call it. I interact with Jen (Jennifer Joyal, Infection Control, Occupational Health Nurse) a lot too. In the community, it's a long list of clients and case workers.

Q. How would your co-workers describe you?

A. Probably the joker of the lot. I enjoy getting a rise out of people and I'm usually pretty good at it. They're never too sure what to expect from me!

Q. What's the best part about your job?

A. I guess it would be the level of professionalism. I joke about MDR being glorified dish washing, but it boils down to being responsible for infection control for the whole organization. If you don't do it well, things will go south fast.

Q. Why should someone consider a career with SSCHS?

A. I think because of our size. We're small and tight knit. With all my jobs, there is a family feel. You make strong friendships and have a real sense of belonging. You get up and go to work because it's your family basically. You walk down the hall and call everyone by name and everyone asks each other how their day is going.

Q. What are some of your interests outside of work?

A. Fishing and hunting mainly.
