Occupational Therapy (OT)

Occupational therapy addresses the reasons why a person cannot do the things (occupations) that they have to, need to, or want to do. Occupations are things you do to occupy your time and may include:

  • Things you have to do (eat, bathe, get around your home)
  • Things you need to do (finances, groceries)
  • Things you want to do (bake, woodwork, hobbies)

The reasons why someone cannot do an occupation can be due to their surroundings (physical or social environment), because of the demands of the activity (occupation) or because of barriers from the person's abilities (physical, emotional, mental).

  • Patients who have had surgery recently should take pain medication prior to their appointment;
  • You should wear comfortable clothing that allows the therapist to assess you properly. (i.e. short sleeve shirt if you are being seen for your wrist);
  • While your appointments with the therapist are covered by OHIP, please be aware that most medical devices are not covered by OHIP. Check with your extended health provider to see if they will cover these items.
